Nonbinary is a term that can be used by people who do not describe themselves or their genders as fitting into the categories of man or woman. A transgender man, for example, is someone who was listed as female at birth but whose gender identity is male.Ĭisgender and transgender have their origins in Latin-derived prefixes of "cis" and "trans" - cis, meaning "on this side of" and trans, meaning "across from" or "on the other side of." Both adjectives are used to describe experiences of someone's gender identity. Transgender, or simply trans, is an adjective used to describe someone whose gender identity differs from the sex assigned at birth. Society identifies these cues as masculine or feminine, although what is considered masculine or feminine changes over time and varies by culture.Ĭisgender, or simply cis, is an adjective that describes a person whose gender identity aligns with the sex they were assigned at birth. Gender expression is how a person presents gender outwardly, through behavior, clothing, voice or other perceived characteristics. For transgender people, gender identity differs in varying degrees from the sex assigned at birth. Unlike gender expression, gender identity is not outwardly visible to others.įor most people, gender identity aligns with the sex assigned at birth, the American Psychological Association notes. Gender identity is one's own internal sense of self and their gender, whether that is man, woman, neither or both. Gender is often categorized as male, female or nonbinary. Gender is often defined as a social construct of norms, behaviors and roles that varies between societies and over time. Sex is typically categorized as male, female or intersex. Sex refers to a person's biological status and is typically assigned at birth, usually on the basis of external anatomy. Some people may continue to use terms that are less commonly used now to describe themselves, and some people may use different terms entirely. Some of the terms now in common usage are different from those used in the past to describe similar ideas, identities and experiences. Other cultures may use different labels and have other conceptions of gender. This guide is not exhaustive, and is Western and U.S.-centric. This guide was created with help from GLAAD. Alex Schmider, associate director of transgender representation at GLAAD, compares using someone's correct pronouns to pronouncing their name correctly – "a way of respecting them and referring to them in a way that's consistent and true to who they are." Glossary of gender identity terms Proper use of gender identity terms, including pronouns, is a crucial way to signal courtesy and acceptance. Our goal is to help people communicate accurately and respectfully with one another. That's why we've put together a glossary of terms relating to gender identity. These issues can involve words and ideas and identities that are new to some. Issues of equality and acceptance of transgender and nonbinary people - along with challenges to their rights - have become a major topic in the headlines. "And when you're speaking to people, it's a really simple way to affirm their identity." It's how someone refers to you in conversation," says Mary Emily O'Hara, a communications officer at GLAAD. "Pronouns are basically how we identify ourselves apart from our name.

And lest art lovers think that the namesakes of the “Cowabunga”-uttering mutant turtles were self-taught geniuses, recent shows in Washington and New York have centered on the artists’ instructors. Raphael is the subject of major exhibitions overseas this year (including this one), which come on the heels of a blockbuster Leonardo show that’s just wound down at the Louvre in Paris. This year marks 500 years since Raphael’s death, and Washington’s National Gallery of Art, which has the most impressive collection of his paintings in the nation, is holding an exhibition of prints and drawings called “ Raphael and His Circle” through June 14. It’s an important time to ask this question, since a whirlwind of activity is surrounding the artists and allowing for new consideration of their work. Did the TMNT cartoon empire do us a service by engraving these figures in our collective consciousness, or did it lead us astray? And if so, who should make the quadripartite cut instead? Given that these names are now synonymous with Renaissance art - and, to some, the totality of its artistic masters - it’s important to investigate whether they really are the epitome of the Renaissance canon. Musicality of Italian names aside, a vital question remains: Did they make the right choice? Are Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni, Raffaello Sanzio and Donato di Niccolò di Betto Bardi (aka Donatello) really the unimpeachable top of the Renaissance class, or are they mere clickbait? The Creation of Adam by Michelangelo on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, in the Vatican Museum in Rome. Supplementary file notesĭid we get something wrong with these details about this plan (especially the datafile)? The double-support bearing also provides a means for adjusting side-thrust to help attain the desired flight circle.Īll wing and canard ribs arc cut from. It is especially important to use a double-support prop bearing and to mount it on a small wedge between it and the motorstick to assure proper down-thrust (see plans). fittings, condenser-paper covering) were obtained from Micro-X Products, PO Box 1063, Lorain, Ohio 44055. These changes were incorporated in the enlarged Paper Stick model and proved quite effective in positioning the CO at the proper location.Ĭonstruction of the Bumbled-Bee is simple and conventional. Even if you have to add a bit of ballast (note the small lump of clay shown at the nose of the prototype Bumbled-Bee in the accompanying close-up pictures), keep the CG at, or forward of, the location shown on the plans! Building the forward canard surface stronger and heavier than might otherwise seem normal, serves the dual purpose of getting both weight and strength at the nose where they are most needed for proper balance and to absorb all the bumping abuse_ To aid in proper CG location, the motorstick dimensions shown in the drawing have been slightly modified from those of the original model shown in the pictures. Which brings us to a few brief words on CG location, before getting into the construction comments. Doing so will give you added motor-winding capacity, as well as helping to keep the CG forward, where we want it. If you plan to fly your Bumbled-Bee only as an Easy-B it would probably be advantageous to increase the motor length an inch or two. Incidentally, the motor length shown on the plans (10 in from prop bearing to rubber hook) conforms to Penny-Plane rules. the design seems to have much yet-to-be realized performance potential. Therefore, built lighter to truly competitive Easy-B weights, or adopted to Penny-Plane surface areas. It has consistently turned in flights of eight and nine minutes under 50- and 65-ft ceilings. The original Bumbled-Bee, shown in the accompanying photos, weighs in at slightly over 3 grams and has competed effectively in both Easy-B and Pen-ny-Plane events in the Northeast. Stall recovery from bumps and hang-ups also seems to be an improvement over conventional tractor designs.Ĭontest performance to date has been encouraging. This seems to be because the aft CG (compared to conventional designs), combined with the decreasing forward thrust as the rubber motor winds down (remember, in most hang-ups the prop will remain free to turn), tends to induce the model to back-off and free itself. However, all flight experience to date has indicated that hang-ups really arc fewer, and those which do occur, seldom require anything more than patience for ultimate retrieval. While an original goal was to reduce hang-ups on obstructions by moving the prop aft, the resulting reduction in the forward span has enabled the model to penetrate smaller crevices than would otherwise be possible. The author (past CLCB chairman and present CLCB member) developed the design from a concept initiated by George Myers (writer of the monthly Radio Technique column in Model Aviation), The original fun-fly model evolved into a competitive airplane and we are now experimenting with a larger version of the Burn-bled-Bee in the Indoor Paper Stick event (page 15 of the December 1976 issue of MAN has photos of Barry Pailet with the canard he flew in the Paper Stick event at the 1976 Nationals). But then you ought to expect the collaboration of an RC columnist and a CL Contest Board member to result in an unusual Indoor model! It was originally intended to christen our little Easy-B canard the 'Bass-ackwards,' but in deference to the tender young eyes which may be reading this text we settled for 'Bumbled-Bee.' In either case, the entire project has been a bumbled, bassackwards comedy of contradictions. Quote: "An Easy-B canard that consistently has turned in flights of 8 to 9 minutes under 50 to 65-foot ceilings. ED-diagnosed concussions due to playing sports were 163,670 in 2012.
